After World War II, Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, known as the “Angel of Death,” escaped to South America and vanished into a shadowy life across Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. Based on Olivier Guez’s novel, Kirill Serebrennikov’s film follows Mengele’s years in hiding, marked by fear, isolation, and the inescapable weight of his crimes. Watched through the uneasy gaze of his son and haunted by memories of the past, the film examines how a war criminal survives, unpunished yet never free, offering a stark reflection on guilt, denial, and moral collapse.

Kirill Serebrenniko (b. 1969) graduated from Rostov State University. A major figure in contemporary theatre, opera, ballet, film, and television, he has directed productions at leading stages and opera houses worldwide. His acclaimed works include the ballets A HERO OF OUR TIME (2015) and NUREYEV (2017), and films such as PLAYING THE VICTIM (2006), YURIYEV DAY (2008), THE STUDENT (2016), LETO (2018), PETROV’S FLU (2021), TCHAÏKOVSKY’S WIFE (2022), LIMONOV: THE BALLAD (2024), and THE DISAPPEARANCE OF JOSEPH MENGELE. Founder of the Gogol Center and later KIRILL & FRIENDS, he has received numerous international awards and honors, including France’s Legion of Honour.
