YOUNG MOTHERS

JEUNES MÈRES

JEAN PIERRE DARDENNE, LUC DARDENNE

BELGIUM | FRANCE / FRENCH / 2025 / 104 mins

1997. Eight-year-old Linda drifts from her wealthy grandmother’s Swiss villa with her carefree mother, Eva. In Italy, they meet sisters Azzurra and Marta. A chance summer encounter binds the three girls in a gang to protect each other, their youth, and freedom. Around them swirl selfish parents chasing fragile dreams, gossiping neighbors, and a queer babysitter searching for belonging in a homophobic world.

Jean-Pierre (b. 1951) and Luc Dardenne (b. 1954), brothers from Belgium's gritty Liège area, grew up amid steel mills and hardship that shaped their raw films. Jean-Pierre studied acting, Luc philosophy; inspired by docs, they founded Les Films du Fleuve. Key works include LA PROMESSE (1996), ROSETTA (1999, Palme d'Or), L'ENFANT (2005, Palme d'Or), TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT (2014). Their handheld, no-music style captures working-class moral struggles simply and honestly, earning Cannes Grand Prix and Best Director nods.
